Cosun working with Avans University of Applied Science

24 January 2012
Johan Raap, environmental technologist at Cosun Food Technology Centre in Roosendaal, has been lecturing part-time at the Health and Environmental Technology Academy (ATGM) of Avans University of Applied Science, Den Bosch, the Netherlands, since 1 January 2012. By sharing his expertise in biomass energy production, he will facilitate Avans' research into the biobased economy and introduce students to this rapidly developing sector. The initiative perfectly complements the widely held ambition of making the southwest of the Netherlands a flourishing centre for the biobased economy.

Cosun recognises the importance of further research to develop an economy based on renewable raw materials (biomass). Our researchers and technologists are already working closely with many external knowledge centres, for example on carbohydrate technology. Johan Raap: “What makes the collaboration with Avans so special is that students are involved in the research projects. By providing our expertise and experience from industry, we are training the technologists of the future, either for our own business or for the institutions and companies we work with."

A second lectureship on biobased products is held by Dorien Derksen of Rubia, a manufacturer of biobased colourings. The collaboration marks the launch of the biobased economy expertise centre. Under the name Biobased TeCh, Avans will offer new courses in the autumn for students who want to specialise and graduate in this new discipline.
