Health effect inulin recognized

14 January 2014
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has adopted a positive opinion for the health effect to use oligofructose, inulin and other non-digestible carbohydrates as a sugar replacer to lower the glycaemic response.

The dossier submitted to EFSA was based on literature data and on newly developed science, jointly set up by the three inulin producing companies. One of them is Sensus, a Royal Cosun company. It shows that oligofructose and inulin have a significant part to play in the area of glycaemic control.

The European Commission will use this positive EFSA advice to formulate the health claim that in due time will be taken up in the Register of Health and Nutrition Claims of the EU. Only when this is done the health claim can be used.
