Climate Goals Cosun Officially Validated by SBTi

09 May 2025
Cosun can confirm that its climate goals have been officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) this month. This means that Cosun's sustainability ambitions are in line with the Paris Climate Agreement.

Hans Meeuwis, CEO of Cosun, stated: “This validation underscores our ambitions towards a future-proof sustainable chain and further reducing our CO₂ footprint. Our commitment to this is high, but it can only be realised if it goes hand in hand with solid earning capacity and maintaining our competitive position. A level playing field and cooperation with the government are therefore essential to achieve these goals and contribute to a healthy planet for future generations.”

Cosun’s sustainability strategy, as part of Unlock 30, focuses on reducing the CO₂ footprint through investments in sustainable innovations, energy efficiency, and the circular economy. By collaborating with growers, suppliers, and customers, Cosun aims for a responsible chain and sustainable growth. Measurable goals are central to this strategy, allowing Cosun to effectively track its progress. Initiatives such as Groeikracht Cosun and the CO₂ reduction programme SCO2RE+ are essential to achieve these goals.

Climate Goals

Cosun has set SBTi-validated goals to significantly reduce its environmental impact. We aim to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 45% compared to the base year 2021. Additionally, Cosun will reduce absolute scope 3 (non-FLAG) greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030, compared to the base year 2022. For scope 3 (FLAG) emissions, related to agriculture, forestry, and other land use, the goal is a reduction of 30.3% by 2030 compared to 2022. We also commit to preventing deforestation, with special attention to the most important raw materials, aiming to achieve this by no later than 31 December 2025.

Collaboration with the Government

Cosun is determined to achieve its goals through strong collaboration between business groups and chain partners. Enhanced cooperation with the government enables Cosun to make faster progress towards effective CO₂ reduction measures.

In October 2024, Cosun therefore signed a principle agreement with the Dutch government, known as an Expression of Principles, to implement significant CO₂ reduction measures at major production sites in the Netherlands, aiming for a 70% emission reduction.
