Central to this day is the important role of the farmer, who plays a pivotal role in society and the economy. Farmers provide food and also make an indispensable contribution to the quality of life in the countryside.
On behalf of the Cosun cooperative, Marianne van den Hoek-Huijbregts, member of the board of directors and arable farmer from Zeeland, put all arable farmers in the spotlight. “We provide healthy, safe and plant-based food every day. Plants are the future and have unprecedented opportunities for plant-based ingredients and foods for humans and animals, but also for biobased solutions and green energy,” says Marianne. Dennis de Winter received the cake; a choice for a grower who “symbolizes the young generation of arable farmers, who apply the latest techniques and insights with passion and energy and who also seeks the connection between farmer and citizen”, Marianne explained.
Thank a Farmer Day ties in with the Dutch Food Week programme. This year, Cosun is again a partner of Dutch Food Week, which will take place from 10 to 17 October. It has been a national podium for years where nutrition, food production and innovation have been central. The 2020 edition is organized around the theme of connection. What is eaten and how does it get on your plate? The aim is to increase consumer awareness of the importance of the farmer. An initiative that Cosun warmly welcomes, knowing the enormous efforts their growers make every day to provide their business groups, including Aviko, Cosun Beet Company and Sensus, with beautiful crops, such as potatoes, beets and chicory. These are processed by the production locations into vegetable food, food ingredients and much more.
